Where to begin Dear Friend.

I have a confession, higher above my feelings for writing and reading is one passion of mine. Movies. I worked at a movie theater, I go to the movies at least once a week. I see about 1/3 of the movies that come out in a given year.

Recently a new movie has hit me. I have gone to see Sinners by Ryan Coogler not once, not twice, not even three times; but four times in its original IMAX run at my local theater. I love this movie.

I had a rule that I followed when I originally worked at my local theater. One time seeing a movie is great. First impression are good and it’s a make or break the first time. That’s as many times as some normally sees a movie in the theaters. Two times is wow. That was a good movie. You’re taking your closest buddies and family to see this movie, cause wow it was good. Three times and you’ve lost the spirit. This is where my rule came into effect. It was just not worth seeing a movie three times, I found myself leaving whatever person I took to the movies with me to see it and I was hanging out with coworkers in the lobby rather than watching the movie. I had already seen it twice, why again.

This was a fairly concrete rule of mine until the third Tom Holland Spider-Man movie. That I went to go see three times. But this post isn’t about that movie. This is about the movie that broke past the three rule, and even fostered a fourth viewing. Sinners

From here on out for the rest of this post I’m going to get real nitty gritty about the movie and why it’s so great. No spoilers but I will get very in-depth on a variety of topics. If that’s not your vibe, by all means, see me tomorrow. Dear Friend, you will be alright.

See Dear Friend, I knew you would stick around. After all, you read my sporadic rant-like writing. Therefore you’re here for the long ride.

Ryan Coogler. Thank you for making this. I can’t imagine you reading this, so perhaps I’ll reach the audience that hasn’t watched the movie. In this essay I will talk about. The Director, The Cast, The Music, The Cinematography, The Story and Things That I Caught That Won’t Fit in Another Category Category.

The Director: Ryan Coogler. Director of Black Panther 1&2, Creed (Just the first one J!) and Sinners. I’m not forgetting about Fruitvale Station, I just haven’t seen it. Regardless Mr. Coogler is a talented director, writer and producer. Frequent collaborator with Ludwig Göransson and Michael B. Jordan. The first of which has done music for every single one of his movies. Ryan Coogler is an amazing director and deserves all the accolades.

The Cast: From Micheal B. Jordan to Wunmi Moskau. All were amazing. I’m going to give bullet points on each

Michael B. Jordan.

-Plays twins Smoke and Stack, of which the accents and vibes of each are distinctive and root together the whole movie with them as the secondary main focus.

Hailee Steinfeld.

-Of Bumblebee, Edge of Seventeen, Arcane and many others fame, she was an amazing side character with great delivery.

Miles Caton.

-The man who stole the the show, with this being his first ever movie ever!

Wunmi Moskau.

-The woman with the perception and knowledge above all others. The explainer person that needs to be in every horror movie to explain to the audience what’s happening. Great emotions and character.

Let us not forget Jack O’Connell, the villainous villain of the movie, no spoilers. (Sammie!)

Many other great performances from a number of actors, but I’ve already gone overboard with this post.

The Music: Ludwig Göransson of Mandalorian and Oppenheimer fame. Your score was perfection, seamlessly bending reality with the funkiest of Blues.

The Cinematography. Notable instances include the use of IMAX film, The grocery store oner and the widening and narrowing of the screen.

The Story: (MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS) With act one being about assembling the team, act two about the party and progression of the night. Followed by act three, sh*t hitting the fan and the horror movie starting.

Things That I Caught That Won’t Fit in Another Category: From the stuntman for Mr. Jordan to the side dialogue continuing as the scene changes, weaving the story and exposition into the background while they scene at hand played. All the dialogue and scenes were purposeful and wasn’t wasteful of their time on screen.

The Best Scene: Picture this SPOILERS I Lied to you playing throughout, visions from the past and the future appearing. Historical images of music coming together to display the music and HOLY SHIT.

Dear Friend, please watch this movie. By the time this post is unveiled to the public, it may be to late to see in theaters. So please purchase this and share it with the ones you hold closest. Because in the end, you will be alright.
