Dear Friend, I watched the newest Marvel movie last night: Thunderbolts*. Normally this is where I would talk about the movie, instead I have decided to talk about my favorite actor from the project. The man, the myth, the Red Guardian: David Harbour.
Most people have probably seen him as a small side character up until 2016 when he portrayed Jim Hopper. I have seen him in a total of fourteen projects, ranging from Marvel to Santa to mechanic. I’d like to take this time to talk about his roles in projects that I liked and as I watch more of his projects I will slowly add more to this list.
Stranger Things: Playing Jim Hopper, the small town chief of Hawkins, Indiana. The show follows team kid, team teen, and team adult as the three separate groups slowly come together and realize they have been working on the same puzzle. This has been the formula for pretty much every season (not that I’m complaining). I love this formula and I think it set a good easy to follow plotline.
In the show he shows as the biggest skeptic, become believer as he uncovers the mystery of (SPOILERS FOR A 10 YEAR OLD SHOW) Will Byer’s death. In later seasons he fights Russians and mythical otherworldly DND inspired monsters. But I think his biggest role is that of father. I think his best facet in the show is that of father, of which he plays amazingly.
Marvel/Red Guardian: So you know how I just mentioned he fought Russian’s and other mythical otherworldly stuff. Yeahhhh, now he’s the Russian. I just love the irony of making an entire two seasons about fighting the Russians to being the Captain America equivalent to but Russian. He plays it really goofily but full of charm and forever the optimist. But as he plays a convict, hero and Thunderbolt*; I again argue for the same case as I had the previous project. That of a father. Mr. Harbour really really shines when he plays a dad. This time to two characters, mild spoiler territory so I just trust me, if your not caught up Marvel wise, watch Black Widow and then watch Thunderbolts*.
Gran Turismo: The last project I want to talk about for now as of original publish date. He plays the grizzled realist of Jack Salter. A made up character in a movie based on a real story. It’s an interesting choice but a choice that really made the movie for me, if you have not seen the movie, out of all of these project I recommend this one the most. Gran Turismo follows the story of Jann Mardenborough, a real life race car driver who rose competed in a real life game to racetrack competition to become a race car driver. Mr. Harbour portrays the trainer (former race car driver) that trains the gamers turning into athletes to be the best they can be. Not quiet a fatherly role, but that of mentor. Of which his demeanor plays into splendidly
Dear Friend, I love this actor and I think you might too. If perhaps we share this opinion together, we will be alright.
