Dear Friend. Therapy is a thing that exists. My lawyers have advised me to say this. Therapy is good, everyone on Earth could and should use it. The only reason I don’t is because I can’t afford it. But I’m working on it.
So in the meantime I’d like to tell you about things that I use as my own personal therapy.
MUSIC: Love it, Love IT, LOVE IT. I constantly rack in six figures of listening time to music and helps me with my mental health problems. I specifically use The Midnight – Endless Summer to help me come out of ill periods. With my current not-doing-writing-fulltime-yet-job I always have an earbuds in and it helps the day go by.
READING (AND BY EXTENSION WRITING): THIS! By very extension of me formulating my thoughts onto a page eventually for people to read. R&W acts as escapism for me. I consider myself a lucky person and things just sort of happen to me. One thing is that books and movies always have a way of being exactly what I need in a given moment. Same with songs. But I notice this more often with books. For instance, a romance novel will discuss issue a young burgeoning couple face and I find it directly relates to something I have experienced, will experience or currently facing. Maybe this isn’t luck but I like to think of it as such rather than coincidence or happenstance or fate.
GAMING: Yeah, it involves a lot of screaming or yelling at my screen, quite a few desk smashes. But that’s just the ones with friends, which are just social outlets. What I mean more for therapeutic type would be your story games or chill games. Something that you can relax and just vibe with. For me sometimes that’s Minecraft digging a mine. Maybe it’s playing Firewatch or What Remains of Edith Finch. Highly recommend both, Minecraft too, but you’ve heard of that.
SLEEPING: A little honk-shoo. Perhaps a little mi-mi-mi-mi. A little of the ZZZZzzzz. Need I say more, just don’t over do it. Everything in moderation, especially this.
With all this in mind on what I do, I hope you will be alright.
